I read your long post about growing up German (under a pic of a young couple 1939) and I thank you for being so honest. I'm part German (grandmother was a Zimbleman) and I want to feel proud of my heritage too. I wish I could cook the wonderful foods that my grandmother made! Hopefully time will heal the pain you still feel from the past. None of it was your fault.

Hi and thank you for reading and writing back. You can feel proud of your heritage. And even more you can be proud of your grandma for taking all the hassle of migrating from Germany to the US with most likely nothing in her hands, not having a clue of what to expect there and for her starting a life right from nothing. That deserves a lot of respect.

Time does heal pain. And actually there's no (history related) pain present in everyday life of Germans. It's just some specific moments, like the one when I saw the photo of the couple, that push the buttons which have been implanted by our (or at least my) education. But I still believe it's good that we've been brought up like this.

And btw it's not that difficult to cook German ;-) (But my own experience from having lived in Canada is that the difficulty is to get the real authentic ingredients… Any sausage just isn't THE sausage ;-)
